about

I listen to a fair amount of exotica music. It’s a fraught genre. This song is intended as a subversive homage, using the form to explore the toxic effects of tourism and the appropriation of island culture, as well as my own role as an outsider and consumer. It’s also about my relationship with Alison, our travel in the United States, and the paradox of searching for one’s self.

lyrics

You saw the cactus bloom;
its scent filled your room.
You cried a thousand times;
and now, you’re fine.

You’d think I’d feel, by now,
like someone else somehow.
I’m on my hero’s journey.
Don’t laugh. It’s not funny.

Aloha!
Do you even know how wild I can get?

Beside a babbling brook,
you took me for a walk.
I stared at the visions everywhere;
but still, I don’t care.

I see the breakers crash;
the sand will never last.
And I know it’s not supposed to stay;
but still, I want my way.

Aloha!
Do you even know how wild I can get?
Aloha!
Do you even know how? ’Cause even I forget.
