I find it funny how you find it sad. Keep telling myself, I can’t be that bad. You’re thinking of me differently; I’m thinking of myself. I’m starting to stop as we speak; I’m starting to lose. I’m falling asleep and I am sorry again. I’m aware I’ve begun to believe too much, Recoiling from your tender touch, Believin’ I’m this way for a reason. You’re thinking of me differently; I’m thinking of myself. I’m starting to stop as we speak; I’m starting to lose. I’m falling asleep and I am sorry again.

I thought the women had agreed to let us live in ecstasy. I was confused by the new romance. You didn’t like my crude advance. Desire seems to get the best of me. Inspired, but I’m singing desperately. I dream we live in harmony. It seems you dream differently. I awake to a barren valley. I loom above; I cast this shadow of love.

I promise to myself to act and feel like someone else. But in the morning, I forget. Then I look at you, and you seem upset.

about

“Singing Desperately,” the title track of our new EP, Singing Desperately Suite, was originally released on our debut LP, Songs of The Saxophones. The song is about feeling indifferent to other people’s suffering. It’s a theme Alison, my partner and bandmate, and I have spent many years considering and I wanted to expand upon.

The new songs on the EP, “Crude Advance” in particular, specifically address the indifference many men feel to the suffering they cause women. In some ways, the songs are a caricature of my own journey from oblivious to imperfectly self-aware, and my intention is to apologize and describe my process of waking up, including my failings along the way. I’d also like to hope I could motivate others to face the dark, unflattering parts of themselves and strive to do better.

Thank you as always for listening.
